Instead, the schoolmaster sees the ghastly ghoul rising in his stirrups, and hurling his own severed head (shown to actually be a fiery Jack-o'-lantern), at the schoolmaster. Ichabod quickly casts a look behind, hoping to see The Ghostly Horseman vanish in a flash of fire and brimstone. Then follows a spectacular chase scene wherein the visually impressive Horseman pursues Ichabod with wild abandon, only to be deterred when Ichabod crosses a bridge near the local Dutch graveyard (the bridge being the point beyond which the horseman can't go, according to the tale). Immediately, the true (?) Headless Horseman appears, laughing maniacally, riding a large black horse that bore a strong resemblance to Daredevil, who is owned by Brom. The atmosphere of fear increases in intensity until it breaks the tension at a false alarm, whereupon Ichabod and Gunpowder laugh hysterically in relief. That Halloween night while riding along on Gunpowder, Ichabod's lonely ride home becomes exceedingly frightening because of his exposure to the possibility of encountering the ghost. Brom musically tells the tale of the Headless Horseman to frighten the terrified schoolteacher. Ichabod has his eye on the Van Tassel wealth and is infatuated by Katrina's beauty and grace as well.Īfter a number of comically unsuccessful efforts by Brom to dispose of Ichabod, who has arrived at the party on his old plowhorse, Gunpowder, a borrowed broken down plowhorse, including a scene at the Van Tassel's Halloween party where he tries to switch his short overweight dance partner Tilda with Katrina, the situation changed when Brom decides to take advantage of Ichabod's strong superstitions. Katrina is a coquette by nature, but sees Ichabod as an opportunity to break from the monotony of Brom scaring away every other potential suitor. Katrina is the beautiful young daughter of Baltus Van Tassel, the wealthiest farmer in the area, and Brom's intended. Finally, however, Ichabod discovers the town beauty, Katrina Van Tassel. Despite his odd appearance, Ichabod quickly proves to be a ladies' man charming all the eligible local maidens. His somewhat odd behavior makes him the ridicule of the rambunctious and robust town bully Brom Bones, who rides Daredevil, his horse. The gangly and lanky Ichabod Crane is the new schoolmaster in Sleepy Hollow. The Headless Horseman runs Ichabod Crane out of the isolated quiet town of Sleepy Hollow. The story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, based on Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (narrated by Bing Crosby). Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ story would not be as it is now without its calm quiet tranquil setting off the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York. In this Dutch colonial setting, the ‘country’ man essentially wins over the ‘city’ man. In the end, when Brom Bones disguises himself as the Headless Horseman of legend (said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper from the Revolutionary War), he chases Ichabod Crane all the way to the Old Dutch Burying Ground, a church and cemetery yard in Sleepy Hollow. Brom Bones knows the land and the history behind it, but Crane does not. This worked because Crane is an outsider, whereas the Dutch farmers are the original settlers of Sleepy Hollow. Also, at the Van Tassels’s party earlier, Brom Bones and the alternative Dutch farmers told recent ghost stories to help lay the groundwork to scare Ichabod Crane. If it were a town, or maybe a bigger city, Brom Bones’s Headless Horseman trick wouldn’t have worked against Ichabod Crane. Irving also uses the description “A pleasing land of drowsy head it was.” The people of the town were lazy and a bit absent-minded.

Using the small village feel of a place like Tarrytown also helped the author to use the idea of supernatural throughout the story. This additionally helps set the mood for the spooky and comic events of the ending. It is a town that is quite superstitious, and seems to be haunted by the ghost of a headless horse-rider. The setting for this story, Sleepy Hollow, is a secluded and really tiny valley off of the Tarry city.
